When we are deceived we feel a great deal of disrespect. It leaves us with a shock and dismay like we don't matter, as our importance is diminished. It's hard to take it lightly if we have a pride that is bigger than normal. Shrugging something off like that is beyond our ability at the time. It grants us a false sense of entitlement to hate and get even.
Titus 3:3 "At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another."
Revenge or mistrust is fueled by our inability to approach people so it is much easier to blame someone than to actually talk to them. It's much easier to gossip details than to help someone who we feel has offended us, after all they are the one who started it. The other option is to talk to them openly without malice!
Whether disobedience or mistake, an act of (what we feel) as aggression towards us is only as big as we make it.
