Have you ever watched a large tree in a wind storm? Notice how the leaves on the top and exterior of the tree receive the most abuse, being flipped, twisted, torn, and jostled around. Those outer leaves also receive the first serious frost too, while the leaves inside the tree are protected by the outer layer of leaves.
I find people are like those leaves. The ones on top are the first to fall away, not because they have died but because they have changed. They are still leaves but now they tell a story of experience, and have passed on the mantel to those leaves that were so long protected by the outer leaves.
